GERFLOR PROJECT AMONG WORLD’S BEST
An innovative recreation hall featuring Gerflor Sports Flooring has won a prestigious global architectural award.
Berry Sports Hall was voted best sports building by judges at the 2009 World Architecture Festival Awards in Barcelona this month.
Managing Director of Gerflor Australasia, Chris Low, congratulated Sydney Architects Allen Jack + Cottier for their inspired response to the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation’s brief for a multi purpose recreation hall at Berry on the NSW south coast.
“Our congratulations to Project Architects Michael Heenan and John Whittingham on this well deserved global accolade,” Mr Low said.
The hall is mainly used by primary school children on camps and holiday programs, as well as community organisations and sporting bodies.
Gerflor multi purpose Sports Flooring is an important ingredient in an architects dream to create a facility where kids can be active and have fun.
Externally the building is anchored by precast concrete panels that have been cleverly punctuated with irregular shaped holes to allow light and reflections of the surrounding rural landscape to filter into the internal spaces.
Inside there’s an inviting space for a range of activities from dance and theatre to rock climbing, and a multi purpose court marked for netball, basketball and volleyball. This is where users appreciate the comfort, safety and performance of Gerflor Sports Flooring.
Project architect John Whittingham said he chose to use Gerflor flooring for a range of performance, maintenance and environmental reasons.
“We chose to use Gerflor because we thought it provided excellent impact resistance and shock absorption appropriate for the wide range of activities likely to occur within the hall,” John said.
“The sustainability credentials of the Gerflor surface also played a part considering the durability and longevity of the product as well as Gerflor’s recycle policy.”
“The traditional maple design was chosen to provide a softer finish in contrast to the off form concrete walls,” John added.
Two other Australian projects took out awards. The Klein Bottle House on the Mornington Peninsular won World’s Best Home award and the New York Times Square ticket booth won World’s Best New and Old Building. The architects were Charles McBride Ryan and Choi Rophia respectively.
